Dear _,
This document is being submitted in support of my application for admissioninto your program.
Born in June 1974, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history ofthousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old.Fewcities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architecturalstyles.Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization,Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures onthe north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzlinghigh-rises in the south.Although, as a child, I was not always able toarticulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld thecity's landscape in awe.I began to understand, at that young age, thatarchitecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of anera.
My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents' best friends, was anartist seasoned in oil painting and photography. She often brought me with herwhen she traveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked infull gear.I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating thebeauty of natural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos.Whatwas more important, I got to know that there are professions of creative workthat calls for imagination and craftsmanship.
Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, Ientered in 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University,China's top engineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance inthe highly competitive National University Entrance Examinations.
At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thusacquired exquisite skills in drawing and design.Since I understood from earlychildhood that inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and widethroughout China's vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet andXingjiang, both in the country's westernmost interior. These travels allowed meto trace modern China's culture to its different sources, and the variety notonly deeply impressed me but also fired my imagination. In my graduationproject, Cashi Contemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended anatural environment into my artistic design by using a system of watercirculation to support and sustain the building. As the most significantresource in an agricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hopefor both the people and their land. With the water circulation system, thebuilding took on added vitality.
In mid-1997, I graduated with my B.S.and took a job as a designer withthe Beijing-based company. My career as an architect thus took off.
Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, Ideveloped my career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream ofprojects. To date, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a maindesigner in (a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues inmeeting a daunting challenge. In addition to gaining a profound understanding ofthe technical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large-scale projects, Ilearned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients andcolleagues. The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competenceat conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that canbe put to good use in other situations. As a result, I now feel even moreconfident of myself than I was before.
My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling inparticular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development. As I cannow readily appreciate a society's cultural, historical and socio-politicalimpact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural andsocial background in my own designs. These days, I view architecture not just asa career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress, and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinesepedagogy. In any case, I have already been through China's best school forarchitectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of myprofessional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school likeyours.I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endowme with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make stillmore contribution to my motherland China.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
During my first consulting project, I was asked to construct a sales plan for an insurance company. The first step was to meet Adam, the director of sales, to discuss forecasting assumptions. A list of questions in hand, I knocked on the door. To my surprise, Adam was very formal in his reception. He did not understand why we were meeting, so I explained that I would be creating sales plans. At that point, he became outright hostile, he barked out his nonanswer to my questions and informed me he was very busy preparing sales plans. Before I could suggest cooperation, I was ushered out, and the door slammed behind me. Too shocked to react to the secretary's condescending smirk, I attempted to grasp why a textbook opportunity for teamwork became such a spectacular failure. What had I done to attract such hostility? I had just wanted to help. I called my engagement manager to complain, but he just accused me of handling the situation poorly. I was crushed and convinced that I was not cut out for consulting.
To this day, I am not sure why Adam was so hostile. Retrospectively, I can only guess that he was insulted and threatened, because no one had formally requested his assistance. Instead, a twenty-two-year-old appeared in his office, ready to perform one of his most challenging tasks.
Adam and I never became friends, but the incident profoundly affected the way I communicate. Now, every time I interview a client, I begin by exploring and allaying any fears the person might have. I explain the project's rationale and seek a frank reaction. The rapport thus established makes the interviewees comfortable enough to share private opinions. This very human interaction not only secures me with quick yet profound insights, but also relationships that often far outlast consulting project.
Yours sincerely,

A wise man once said “how dreadful knowledge of the truth can be, when there’s no help in truth.” I think, out of all thoughtful things one can think about, this quotes is unique description of what the depth of Drama and the Performing Arts can do for people. By studying Drama, we can become a variety of people, trapped within one single mind, all trying to be freed and each with their own personality and poison. Humanity has helped Drama so much to produce narrative of such calibre, and characters of such depth and poise – characters, which can be as sweet and innocent, or can take the more disgusting side of what being a human is, being as evil as what thought possible
Performance Art explores the whole range of human emotion and can produce tremendous performances and visual experiences and with Drama, in particular, we can go further than flesh and blood and express ourselves as somebody else and take on this ‘mask’. The most profound thing I have found when studying Drama is that we can become any person in the entire world, and still be us
I have always had a love for the performing arts since I can remember; for there has never really been anything else I have ever wanted to do apart from act. But acting is not just a subject to study people, narratives or social issues – we can discover so many things about ourselves, why we perform a character this way: is it because this person is so much like us? There have been numerous qualities I have discovered about myself while participating in drama. In teaching, I have learn how to really connect with people and help them to explorer what their feelings produce and more notably, how we learn about others, about a single person just by the way they say a monologue
Teaching has been a great experience for me because it has given me the time to evaluate my own performance and teaching skill, learning to become that character just a little but more. This has also been enhanced by the performances I have taken part in, learning to work together in teams to realise the dream of the narration and the vision of the director (for nothing really exists without the vision or image)
While experiencing other aspects of the Performing Arts, I have found that is has increased my performance skill on whole and expended my knowledge on the performance world greatly, Dance, Art and English all focusing on similar issues such as the Commedia dell’arte, Henrik Ibsen, Physical Theatre and Movements and philosophies. These subjects have greatly complemented my time in Drama, and increased my confidence and ability in being a performer. Being involved in 5 consecutive school productions, 2 amateur productions, teaching experience and a student has really influence me concerning the determination I will put into a career in Drama and Acting, and just working with these people and directors have really bettered me in the way I act, see myself and carry on with my life. The Performing Arts is such a brilliant profession to work in, because there is so much opportunity to explore the world
I know that I can offer the performing arts the time, the expense and the spark that it deserves. There is nothing else in world that I would devote more time to than being on the stage or acting in the street, and with the passion and determination to succeed behind me, I will give that spark and flavour that acting and the performing arts is all about. I know I can offer so much, because it is the only profession where, maybe just for one night, I can become someone else and do a damn good job of being that person – and I can easily say that I can offer the world, because performance and acting is my whole world. As well as enjoying Drama, I have also taken a shine to Philosophy and finding the reason for irrationality, and I feel particularly moved in amazement by the work of Bob Fosse and George Orwell for their use of horror, sorrow and murder. And a great interest to the History of Art, because so much of the story of us is portrayed in Art and more so these days it is so unique how Art and Drama work together to produce movement, beauty and conception.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
Marketing experts like to classify people into different generation groups, believing that people of the same age share similar value and attitudes. I agree with those experts'' theory in that it emphasizes the connection between the circumstances of one's upbringing and one's later outlook on life. My personality, talents, values, even career choice have been profoundly influenced by my family life and upbringing in Taiwan.
My name is Peter Huang and I’ve grown up in Ten-Mou, a multicultural neighborhood in suburban Taipei. During the early years of my childhood, my parents exerted a profound influence over my development. Though neither of them was involved in business, by watching their integrity and hard work, I learned more about the true meaning of success than I would ever have in any classroom.
My father is an Air Force colonel. He joined the R.O.C Air Force at the age of 14, struggling to achieve his personal best as the supply division chief of the R.O.C. Air Force Academy. Unlike some officers in the military, who depended on family relationship and privilege to get promoted, my father gained his position by hard work and assiduity. He thus emphasized the importance of industriousness when it came to my education. When I was 10, I attended a speech contest. During the week before the contest, my father and I spent two hours a day together, organizing the lecture content, adjust my rhythm, and rehearsing. I was a shy, soft-spoken child, and found speaking in public difficult at first. But through my father's patient efforts and his believe in the rewards of hard work, I gradually became an excellent public speaker and won many of the contests that followed. As a result of the experiences such as this, I learned a very strong work ethic and emulated some of my father's best characteristics - perseverance and dedication.
These qualities served me well as I entered mandatory military service in Taiwan and faced many difficult situations. I once led a squad to enact the typhoon disaster relief action in Nan-tou. We had one week in which to salvage a factory that was half-buried in mud. As the squad commander, I not only supervised, but also participated in the demanding and seemly endless digging work. And each night, after an exhausting work when all other soldiers were asleep, I spent extra hours checking if there were sufficient supplies and making plans for the next day's relief action. When I finally laid down to sleep, I could not help but reflect on how much I had developed, as both a person and a leader, since that first speech contest.
My mother has a warm and kind personality, and has always reached out to the expatriates in our neighborhood. She organized a language exchange club with the American students in local colleges, hoping to increase understanding of Taiwanese and American cultures through the exchange of language. I took part in the club when I was still in elementary school. This childhood multi-cultural experience instilled in me an active personality and willingness to interact with people of different cultures. In particularly, it strengthened my interest in American and my desire to work and live there one day.
My mother’s emphasis on international exchange and cooperation has led me to work for the Fulbright Foundation in Taipei as a research assistant. This position allows me to interact with educational associations in the United States and to take part in international conferences. I once participated in a venture capital seminar in Hsin-Chu, working on the issue of graduate level technology management education with representatives of major high-tech companies and academic institutions. Last November, I represented the Foundation in an international Tele-conference in Taipei. The conference was conducted both in English and in Chinese and was hosted by the Prime of Ministry of Education. My work has also given me the opportunity to know and become friends with exceptional Fulbright scholars from the United States.
While my childhood years shaped my character, it was my high school and college years which led to my interest in business. 1988 was both a determining year to my career choices and a turning point in Taiwan's economy. As people familiar with Taiwan's modern economic history know, the exchange rate of the New Taiwan Dollar to U.S. Dollars moved from 40:1 to 25:1 in that year under the overwhelming pressure of American government. Thus meant that the traditional advantage of Taiwan's economy, low labor costs, was no longer our strength. People everywhere were talking about the future of Taiwan's economy. Out of a young man's passion, I wanted to contribute my talent and effort to my country. That was the time at which I made up my mind that someday, I will make Taiwan-made products famous world-widely, like those produced by IBM, Intel, or Microsoft.
This teenage naive patriotic dream transformed into an interest in business administration and economics after I graduated from Taipei First Senior High School. I focused my college study on manufacturing administration and economics. From four years of lectures, seminars, and in-factory study in the department of Industrial Engineering at National Formosa University, I acquired skills in quality insurance, manufacturing planning and control, and factory improvement and diagnostic methods. In my economic class, I learned how prices, preferences, and incomes affect people's demand of goods from the microeconomic. I also acquired knowledge of how various factors - government policies, currency exchange rate, and balance of international trade - affect a country's economics growth. My interest in business, however, is not limited to industrial engineering and economics. In my junior year, I also took 6 credits of accounting courses and learned the knowledge of basic accounting principles, financial statements, and managerial accounting. To acquire a more thorough understand of management information systems, I chose Alumni Association Database Management System for Department of Industrial Engineering as my graduate activity project. From each step of developing the database system, I learned solid skills in FoxPro programming and enterprise demand analysis.
I am thankful that my parents provided me with an environment that encouraged me to develop my personality and an intellect for which I am remembered. With a deeply-instilled work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and a high level of motivation, I believe I will enrich the professional and social environment at your esteemed Buchman School and continue to grow as a expert in high-tech industry.
Yours sincerely,
