Dear _,

The subjects of maths and physics have always fascinated me and I knew very early on that I wanted to pursue a career that involves science. As I progressed through school I found that I was much more interested in the application of the theory rather than the theory itself, and this is why I would like to study electronic engineering. I enjoy physics particularity as it can be observed in every aspect of life. From apples falling from trees to lightning, physics explains how the world works, and engineers throughout history have used their knowledge of physics to overcome problems that they face. The Romans built aqueducts to supply their cities with water; William Thomson helped lay the transatlantic telegraph cables that made communication between Europe and the Americas viable.

I also studied Advanced Higher Music last year at school. I am very interested in the use of electronics in music, and I wrote a project on the physics of the electric guitar. This interest prompted me to spend a week of work experience at Wolfson Microelectronics, a local company that engineer integrated circuits for many high profile audio equipment firms. During my stay I was assigned the task of designing and assembling a circuit to investigate the voltage offset and noise created by an operational amplifier. I was also introduced to a silicon microphone, a development which is sure to be significant in the future of electronics, and introduced to all the main stages in the development of a microchip, from design to failure analysis. My forthcoming Advanced Higher Physics investigation will be concerned with the properties of op-amps, the variables that affect these properties, and their applications.

In June, I attended a week-long Headstart course held at the University of Cambridge. We were given a task to assemble and programme a robot to navigate a course, using both dead-reckoning and sensors; I was part of the winning team. The course was thoroughly enjoyable and confirmed that engineering was the subject for me. I have applied to spend my gap year working in the engineering industry, through the Year in Industry scheme. I hope that I will gain invaluable experience of the industry in which I would like to build my career in, and this will no doubt help me understand better how what I learn at university relates to real-world applications.

I play the violin, guitar and bagpipes all to a high standard. I am a first violin in the main school orchestra and the chamber orchestra, lead guitar in the school Rhythm and Blues band and a senior member of the pipe band. I hold the rank of Corporal in my school cadet force, and I am a young leader at my Scout troop. Balancing these numerous extra-curricular activities with my academic work has forced me to develop my time management skills. My involvement in both cadets and Scouts has also greatly added to my team working and leadership skills. I was the leader of the team that won the Edinburgh Area Scout camping competition in 2005, and we finished in the top 5 in the country. Currently, I am working towards both my Duke of Edinburgh Gold award and my Queen's Scout award.

I also have a keen interest in computers, assembling my first at the age of twelve, and I am currently teaching myself Mandarin Chinese, something that I would like to continue studying throughout university and a skill that I believe will be very useful in the future, especially in the electronics industry. I keep up to date with the latest scientific news in by reading both Physics Review and New Scientist.

I believe that studying electronic engineering is the best way for me to apply my accumulated knowledge of maths and physics and I look forward to a career that will constantly present me with new challenges.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Literature can be seen as a microcosm of society, reflecting the irregularities and inequalities that are present in everyday life. As an English student, my initial interest in Law stemmed from its portrayal in fictional works such as ‘To Kill a Mockingbird;’ however, it is the real life applications, as explored in the Times Law supplement and films like ‘Erin Brockovich,’ showing it to be both humanitarian and intellectually stimulating that affirmed my aspirations to study Law.

A levels have given me the chance to explore and develop some skills that would constitute a good Law student. In English Literature the ability to infer information and substantiate a conclusion is essential; the component in AS coursework to write a discursive essay “is King Lear a victim of circumstance or a tragic hero?” juxtaposed the emotive element of a mans downfall with detached facts. To arrive at a reasoned conclusion, it was necessary to look at the whole picture and read around a variety of critical opinions in order to build up a body of evidence in order to have an objective judgement. I am interested in the ever-changing nature of Law as in order to better serve society or fairly arbitrate cases with extenuating circumstances such as that of Kiranjit Ahluwalia; initially given life for killing her husband after enduring 10 years of abuse her sentence was later remanded.

Furthermore, I believe French is a beneficial subject, as through studying French, my awareness of the structure and wording of English has also increased; translating an article often takes much preparation and preciseness of language to comprehend the intended nuance of meaning. In addition, Business Studies requires a good knowledge of current affairs, reading around so as to have an opinion on the many factors that could influence a business, there was also the opportunity to study some aspects of Corporate Law; I was particularly interested in the changing attitudes of society as reflected by the gradual introduction of anti-discrimination Laws. Taking AS Psychology I studied topics clearly associated with the practicalities of Law, questioning the work by Loftus and Palmer on the reliability of eyewitness testimony; however, it also gave me an insight into the depth of human nature and the factors that can affect it. In particular, the work of Milgram showed me the need to question an individual’s behaviour and the reasons behind it.

In addition, to explore the possibility Law as a profession I completed a weeklong placement at a solicitors firm in Epsom. I was given the chance to shadow a solicitor, alongside further reading such as ‘The Law Machine’ by Marcel Berlins, this was invaluable in showing the realities and strenuousness of working in this field. The necessity of a dedicated and diligent approach in order to be successful greatly appealed to me and sustained my interest in Law.

In regards to extra curricular activities, at my sixth form I have been selected to be a prefect, a role requiring patience and persistence when working with younger years. In the Young Enterprise scheme, which involved creating and running a business, I was selected to be Managing Director by my peers for the tuition service we established. The post required talking to large groups of parents; in order to persuade them to become shareholders it was essential to talk both persuasively and confidently. Also I work regularly as a tutor for Explore Learning, teaching Maths and English to groups of young children, and do voluntary work for the Epsom and Ewell Bengali association: I help elder members of the community who don’t speak English fluently to fill in forms and write letters. These activities have all given me the opportunity to communicate with varying types of people in different circumstances, be it to clarify a principle, promote a business opportunity or provide instruction.

A Law degree is not restricted to furthering my aspirations of becoming a solicitor; it would provide a unique opportunity to explore a variety of issues that I feel passionate about. With the skills that I have already explored, I will strive to be a hardworking and successful undergraduate who will play a full part in university life.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My increasing enthusiasm for news at local, national and international levels, together with my long-standing ambition to become a journalist, makes a journalistic course a natural choice for me. My reason for wanting to enter into the field of journalism can quite simply be put down to a developing awareness of the need for informed and balanced representation of facts

On completing my GCSEs, financial circumstances meant I had to spend three years in full time employment. Returning to education in 2001, I found that the sense of responsibility, focus and determination that had been magnified in the workplace proved very useful in motivating me to pursue my academic and career aspirations. Having demonstrated an ability to adapt to different roles in the workplace, I have had no problems adapting to an academic environment

A great believer in education, I see the role of the journalist as an educating force, an incredibly important one. My study of 'A' Level Government and Politics has served to highlight the importance of informing the public about how decisions being made elsewhere are affecting their lives. It has been particularly interesting to study the role of the media in the political arena and I look forward to studying the role of the media in society, at university

I have always had a natural flair for writing, which has further been improved by my study of 'A' Level English Language and Literature

This subject has given me the skills and versatility to differentiate between and accommodate, the written and the spoken word. It has also given me a deeper understanding of the power of the English language

The development of these skills has extended into my study of 'A' Level Classical Civilisation. Each of my current areas of study has served to nurture my naturally inquisitive nature and improve my analytical and debating skills. Simultaneously, my part time position as a telecommunications assistant has proved useful in enhancing the communication and negotiating skills that are essential for any journalist

Work experience placements at my local newspaper, The South Wales Evening Post and local radio station, The Wave, have confirmed my ambition to enter into the field of journalism. My own use of online and interactive news services has encouraged my interest in the multimedia aspect of journalism. Studying Key Skills in Information Technology has given me the grounding to develop the skills that new communication technology demands. I am currently part of the Communications Team at Gorseinon College, writing articles for the college magazine and presenting news on the college radio station. I thoroughly enjoy working within such a diverse team

Outside of my academic routine I have a number of hobbies and interests. I have a passion for singing and have won many competitions in this field. Art is another talent I have developed considerably since leaving comprehensive school. In the context of my chosen undergraduate programme, I hope that my composition skills will prove useful in studying the role and effects of visual images in newspapers and on television

I attend classes in power yoga on a weekly basis in order to keep fit and look forward to sampling what university has to offer in the way of sports societies and music facilities

Being at an institute of further education has given me the discipline needed for independent learning which I have put into practice by teaching myself Teeline shorthand. Having proven my ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, I am confident that I am prepared for the challenges of higher education and the world of journalism.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Since a very young age - where all my friends were aspiring to become firemen, astronauts and rockstars - I have always dreamed of wearing a suit to work. I don't know what it was, but I guess I just identified all these men as being the real players in the world - driving fast cars and hitting it off with beautiful women. These guys - the lawyers, entrepreneurs and accountants - were all sipping champagne and living the high life. Of course, you don't have to wear a suit to be making money (look at Steve Jobs, for example), it's not all fun and games, and you have to be damn good at what you do, but my ambitions have remained the same. This is what I want to be, but money is no longer the sole object, in my opinion.

This has stemmed from my upbringing, where every morning CNN is put on the TV, stock portfolios lie in messy stacks around the house and political conversation runs rife at the dinner table. Every day I would hear my father talking about his business ventures and garnered a great interest. To me, the business world seemed entirely different to our regular one: it was a grandiose battlefield of thousands of opposing teams – a vicious free for all where the only objective was to win. Language like “slaughtering the competition” was frequently used, and I instantly knew that this game was more intense than any sport, more exciting than any video game and more fulfilling than any hobby. I once even tried my hand at business of my own – selling gumballs at school – which, to my surprise, was rather successful, if short-lived (regulated into the ground).

By the time I was beginning my IGCSE year I was absolutely itching to take a Business & Management course. I felt a lot of it come naturally to me, remembering all the terms and advice I had heard from my father. All along it was extremely satisfying to know that whilst I would hardly use anything I had learnt in math’s (unless I need to know the exact angle that my ladder is at), no matter what profession I would take, I could apply this. I took part in stock competitions, both in and outside of school, in an attempt to better my understanding of the seemingly confusing concept of stock exchange.

One of the most interesting aspects of business for me is international markets, which then extends into economics. I have often been told that one of my most valuable qualities is that I am tri-cultural, coming from an extremely interesting background. I have lived in Spain my entire life, with an American mother and English father, who is a chartered accountant and previously owned a successful record label; he now sells property on the real estate market. I feel that this is where much of my business background originates. Another interesting quality that has rubbed off my parents is Buddhism. Whilst am not a firm believer in the Buddhist philosophies, I find many of them extremely compelling.

Over the course of the IB, I have done much to advance myself in the field of public speaking – a skill I find to be of increasing importance in the modern business world. Last year I took the position of president of the Toastmasters International Youth Leadership program and earned my certificate. This will be the second year in which I will be attending the annual IMUN conference, where I have signed up for the position of chair, and if not, will represent the World Bank. Last year I represented the highly unspoken country of Timor Leste. Over the course of the summer I attended the prestigious GYLC conference, where I talked to [insert names here] and attended speeches such as [name]_- Mastering the Challenges of International Business, by Dr J. Joseph Kim, CEO of VGX pharmaceuticals. During a simulation global summit I represented France, and was appointed to the digital divide, e-commerce and free trade commissions, where I advocated the view of protectionism. Throughout both of these conferences I spoke in front of hundreds of other scholars, which, by the end, felt perfectly natural and comfortable. These valuable experiences gave me an invaluable insight into the running of governments and their regulating businesses as well as allowing me to further advance my public speaking skills. I have also been appointed the role of head prefect – which entailed an ISCO head prefect training course - and member of the student council in my school, and lend a hand in managing and working in our school tuck shop, which have all helped hone my management abilities.

Whilst all of these provided me with excellent skills, over the summer I had the privilege to gain work experience from one of the leading law firms in Europe and the largest and most highly regarded in Spain – Garrigues. This allowed me to gain insight into how an international company is run and managed. This also demonstrated to me what it is like to work as a lawyer in a large firm and educated me on the different parts of law and what they entail and allowed me to use my near-fluent Spanish in a work environment. The department I found most interesting was that of civil law – more specifically, litigation. I was brought to a court in order to view a labour dispute, which I found extremely interesting.

Overall, I have a rather diverse set of hobbies and interests, but my main passion is computers. I have been using computers since the age of 5, when I mainly used them for learning. Now, I feel I have become extremely proficient with the Windows Operating System to a near professional level, which I often use to assist my family and friends with technical problems. I am also very proficient (though less so) with a Mac system, and am now learning the more technical Linux. For a long time I studied in order to be able to build a computer from scratch, and have modified individual components. I find computers extremely satisfying as there is always going to be a problem, and therefore a solution, which may not always be obvious. I intend to continue onto learning the programming language Python, which I have introduced myself to over the summer.

Apart from this, I have branched off into different computer hobbies, such as graphic design, where I have learn to Adobe Photoshop to an excellent standard, and am now able to create graphics from scratch. I have used this to help design and do graphical work for the last 2 school yearbooks for which I received an award, as well as create graphics such as CD covers for a friend who does musical work and create posters. I also practice disk jockeying and also put this into practice where I controlled the lights and music for a concert for said friend. I would love to carry on these interests in university, possibly contributing to the college radio station and publications.

Whilst I do not consider myself a sporty person, I have previously competed in intramural field hockey, and socially play paddle and normal tennis. I jog nearly every day; however, it is just as much for meditating purposes as to keep fit. However, since gaining my Red Cross first aid license last year, I have found myself a more useful purpose on the playing field.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

The experience I gained while travelling and staying in various hotels positively affected my final decision to choose the hospitality business as the industry to realize myself and work in.

Since my childhood I have had an opportunity to develop myself both physically and intellectually. I am good at swimming and even won 3 city competitions. I am also keen on dancing where the 3rd place and the audience prize at the belly dance contest ???Miss Oriental 20xx??? was my latest achievement. These skills help me to be in good shape because any employee of the hotel is its face and should look impeccably. Sport gives birth to a vast array of qualities such as aspiration to leadership and victory, diligence, firmness, persistence, self-confidence and motivation and possessing these traits can lead to management.

Since my elementary school I have always wanted to take the leading position everywhere. I have tried to take part in all school events, working in the school???s activity and participating in concerts, Russian, German, English and Latvian olympiads and sport competitions. I have been a member of the Drama Club, called ???Reveranss???, for 5 years, having played in many performances, and as a consequence I have a broad outlook and an open mind. Besides, it is really significant for me to help to raise my school???s rating.

You might think that everything is easily achievable for me. However, reaching any target is a toil. Actually, sometimes I did not even sleep for nights to meet deadlines. For instance, last year I was working over my project about Saint-Petersburg for a week alone, but it was worth it and I won a 10-day excursion to this amazing city. Apart from that, I have always taken a keen interest in learning languages and studying new topics. As a result, the language is not a setback for me due to school???s rigorous syllabus in teaching English. In addition, I am very punctual. Punctuality is a relevant quality that every hotel manager needs. Being late means disrespect and is absolutely unacceptable in the sphere of hospitality.

When I ask my friends and acquaintances to say something about me, they describe me as a sociable, industrious, creative, energetic and optimistic person, with a good sense of humor. I appreciate meeting new people. I can listen to them and be tolerant and tactful. What is more, I have always been fond of studying business, economics and marketing as to understand the reasons of the development in different countries and to become acquainted with the methods of achieving the ideal structure and analyzing the economical situation in order to find a right way to success.

I personally believe that your university will assist me to successfully reach my objective to become a hotel manager. I want to make my contribution into this field. I have recently been to England and this journey helped me to make my choice of the United Kingdom as the place for studying as I consider the UK to be the place where I can obtain a high-quality education, and afterwards successfully apply my knowledge to practical work. I enjoy self-education and I believe that this process will greatly benefit under the supervision of leading experts. Due to all the above mentioned, I am fully confident of the fact that entering your university will be the right step. Then may be one day the poor 3-star Italian hotel I stayed at will become a magnificent 5-star one.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I am applying to study a degree in economics principally because of the diversity of both the subject and its applications, and because I find it fascinating and challenging at the same time. Having studied the subject at A-level, I believe that the possible depths to which it may be studied are almost endless, and as such, the number of real-life situations to which it is relevant is similarly vast. For example, the area of economics in which I am most interested is the study of the ways in which monetary and fiscal policies affect society as a whole. For this reason, I found the Public Choice theory particularly engaging. In the future, I hope to gain employment in the banking or financial sector, and I think that a course as flexible as economics would be of great benefit to this.

Recently, I have participated in the Bank of England’s ‘Target 2.0’ challenge. From this, I not only improved skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and analytical skills, but also learnt about the consequences that a seemingly small decision, such as the lowering of the interest rate by a quarter of one percent, can have on just about everyone. Another aspect of the project that I enjoyed was the way in which all of our team members’ research and work came together at the end to form the whole, and enabled us to come to a conclusion. I would very much like to have the opportunity to study this area, among others concerning the interest rate and monetary policy, in greater depth. I am enthusiastic about the subject, and a highly motivated student, and I therefore think that I would be well suited to studying economics at university level.

My hobbies mostly centre around music; I sing, play the piano to grade four standard, and have also composed music for keyboard-based instruments. I have found that the more knowledge of music, and its structures, that I have gained, the more insights into popular music I have acquired, and can then enjoy it on many more levels. I think that this holds true for many subjects: the more understanding you have of something, the more you can enjoy it. I also like to get involved in sports, such as swimming, in my spare time, as I find them a great way to unwind and have fun at the same time!

In secondary school, I held a position of responsibility as a prefect. I also sang soprano in the school choir, which again helped me to hone my skills of teamwork and co-operation. Prior to beginning sixth form, I spent a summer working as a volunteer in a scheme run for children with disabilities, which was both a lot of fun and very rewarding. Although working with some of the children was demanding and required the ability to adjust and adapt quickly, I would definitely say that it was worth it and would love to do it again. In addition, I currently have a part-time job in a retail environment. Because of this, I believe that I am able to communicate and solve problems more effectively. I have also gained understanding of the worlds of business and commerce within the context of a large company.

I have put serious consideration into my choice of course applications, and believe that I would be able to contribute both academically and socially to university life.

Yours sincerely,

1、Homestay

Dear _,

There has been criticism in the media of Chinese young people for being egocentric and lacking a sense of social responsibility. In my opinion however, this is not the case of my friends and I. While studying finance at Ohio State University, I paid close attention to social issues in China. Some people are benefiting from the developing economy, while many others do not. In order to change this situation, and redistribute social resources more reasonably, government support and policy reforms are required. I hope I can provide the Chinese government with valuable consultation in the future so as to enable more people to benefit from this economic development.

My studies at Ohio State University enabled me to acquire a deep understanding of economics, finance, and accounting. It also gave me an opportunity to learn about American financial systems and operations. The American subprime mortgage crisis which caused a Financial Tsunami brought about whole new schools of thought regarding the global economy. I realized that there is excessive government intervention in resource allocation, especially with regards to loan investment and loan projects. Nowadays, American financial regulations are transforming from institutionally based and functional to objectives-based. This is giving new ideas to other countries as to how they could reform.

I did not start thinking about these issues in an offhanded manner. I have been in deep thought as to the financial systems used in Chinese villages for several years. China uses separated financial supervision, which has created many problems including repeated supervision, high cost, and lack of an effective coordination mechanism. Farmers find it difficult to take out loans creating a delay in economic development. If this situation is not improved, more than 60% of farmers will be unable to lift themselves out of poverty, and there will be no social justice.

The differences I have observed between the Chinese and American financial systems has inspired me to learn more about China’s current situation. In 20xx, I was awarded the chance to take an internship in a commercial bank. I mainly helped my supervisor organize materials, but I also participated in interviews with customers. One day for instance, all of the banks supervisors were too busy to receive a customer requiring consultation. Fortunately, my experience following my supervisor around, combined with my academic knowledge of financial systems, allowed me to confidently deal with the customer. I introduced the financial products available, and their characteristics. My supervisor later closed the deal, but was aware of my conduct which won me respect and more chances to work independently. Whilst working at this bank, conversations with my colleagues enabled me to understand in greater depth why China is facing a lack of credit. People in poorer areas have less access to credit, which is why there is less investment. I feel that I now understand one of the biggest causes of the gap between rich and poor.

I have also taken part in a number of charity initiatives. In the summer of 20xx, I worked for “Yixin Web” as an intern, joining a project called “warm school house”. In Shaanxi province in China, gas poisoning caused a number of children to lose their lives. Later, their school removed its coal stove, but lacked the funds to install a new heating system. Yixin Web raised 50,570RMB and sent out electric heaters to four schools in the area. Although the leaders from Yixin Web warned me that the area was desperately poor, but I was still shocked on arrival. The hills were bare. A local teacher told me that the soil in the hills had to be improved in order to plant crops there, but a lack of funds had left large areas desolate. The government has set out poverty alleviation policies providing interest free loans, but there are still many difficulties. The main problems stem from the lack of a holistic financial system.

Four-years of college life have helped me truly realize that finance should not be used as a means for personal gain, but instead as a device to help lift people out of poverty. In the last 30 years China has developed rapidly, yet the gap between the rich and poor has widened. In order to improve this situation, the system needs to be reformed through policy analysis and the help of experts. On the basis of strong financial theories and excellent professional skills, I hope to study an MPA program and go on to enhance my decision-making, analytical, organizational and coordination abilities.

I truly hope to obtain a professional degree in MPA from Cornell University Graduate School. I believe the Graduate School will help me balance study with my life, such as the Student Governance-Cornell University Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, which allows me to have many chances to do practice. I very much appreciate and value how the school helps new students adapt to their new environment. This proves to me that Cornell University really focuses on the students themselves. I am quite sure that what I will learn in Cornell will give me everything I need to build my future career.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

The personal data enclosed in this application file will demonstrate my profile as a child prodigy who entered into Jilin University at 16 and joined the country's topmost scientific research institution as a graduate student at 20. Now with an engineering experience of 4 years at the age of 24, I would like to scale still higher intellectual heights by pursuing advanced studies, an education process that I hope will gain me the competitive edge for personal growth and push me to the forefront of scientific progress.

Immersed in the academic atmosphere of an intellectual family, I was encouraged in my early childhood by my parents to read books in a wide range of disciplines. With this privileged background, I attended primary school at 6, at least one year earlier than the normal admission age of 7 or older. I felt so lucky-God blessed me with so many natural gifts. At an early age I showed a natural talent in mathematics and a strong memory, the attributes that enabled me to excel my classmates, especially in such challenging subjects as mathematics, physics and chemistry. I took part in a variety of provincial and national contests, demonstrating my excellent academic skills and wining many prizes.

Blessed with my academic potence, I was able to finish my primary and secondary education in 10 years, two years ahead of the usual twelve years. At 16, I entered a privileged class specially designed for the gifted students at Jilin University, a cradle of scientific and technological talents in China. The class selects only 90 students out of more than 1000 child prodigies across China each year. (Jilin University is a prestigious university of general education with 20 departments and a regular annual enrollment of 1,500 students) I studied at Electrical Engineering (E. E) Department, a highly selective department with a gathering of smart students who are hard to compete with.

Four years of undergraduate studies had me well trained in a wide range of disciplines, and my outstanding academic performance encouraged me to pursue an advanced degree. With a concentration on mathematics, communication and computer, I studied a variety of courses in my undergraduate years, among which were Higher Mathematics, Probability Statistics and Stochastic Process, Theories of Signal and Information, High Frequency Circuits and Principles of Modern Communications Systems, Computer Principle and other courses in the Electronic Technology field. I also studied Western culture, History and Economics in order to build up a good base for my education. With a wish to build a solid foundation for my future research and study, I was fully devoted to my academic training at college. My hard work proved to be successful. My overall GPA of 3.57/4.0 ranked in the top one percent of my class. Upon graduation in 1994, I won easy acceptance into Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications as a graduate student at 20, an age when most Chinese students would be just starting their university education. At this university, I narrowed my academic interest down to the area of mobile communications and digital communications.

My MA education proved to be another period of fruitful and successful academic pursuits. Among the courses I selected were Probability Theory, ISDN & ATM, SPC, Digital Signal Processing, Personal Communications, C++ language. These disciplinary training prepared me to delve deeper in the study of electrical engineering and communications. To keep me informed of the latest developments in my field and to brush up my English language skills, I also read the latest professional journals and periodicals of the telecommunications on a regular basis. Burning the course of my MA program, my outstanding academic records won me various scholarships in seven consecutive years, among which, to name a few, were Excellent Students, Excellent Person, Excellent fellowship.

To garnish this writing with other personal activities other than academic achievements, I need to mention my perfect performance in a dancing contest at Jilin University, which won me the first prize.

Anyway, looking back at my campus life, I feel confident to say that I have fulfilled the education goal to my satisfaction.

Teaching Experience

I worked as a teaching assistant at the Electronics Circuit Group in Personal Communications in my third semester at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. I taught product applications and the telecommunications development in China. I trained the students by theoretical approach and also taught them how to solve real problems by practical means. I found the teaching position so much enjoyable. The daily academic exchanges between the students and myself were beneficial to both parties. I believe that my students enjoyed my teaching too because my classes were well attended.

Starting from April 1998, I worked as a part-time teacher at HP corporation. Later I was also employed by Software Center Motorola, China. I taught Motorola customers the principle of CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and the usage of the HP instruments for testing CDMA Base station and CDMA Handset. Motorola customers were all satisfied with my teaching. I not only grasped advanced knowledge but also, more importantly, learned how to be a good teacher.

Research Experience

In the second year of my graduate studies, I began to work as research assistant of Professor Dacheng Yang, a renowned expert in digital and mobile communication Research and Design Center of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. After learning the background, application, principle, and advantage of CDMA, I selected the signaling design of the CDMA Base Station Interface as my research topic. I evaluated and studied the protocols IS-95, IS-634 and the ULTRA interface protocols of Lucent. Applying software engineering method and Oriented-Object approach, I designed the internal interface of Base Station System between BSC and BTS-Abis interface, which is one of the most important parts of such a large and sophisticated project. Then referring to protocols LAPD/LAPF, integrating the latest knowledge and using one step. By working on this project, I learned more about CDMA, GSM and other mobile communications systems. Later I felt so proud to hear what I had done was downloaded to the board and the design ran flawlessly.

Working Experience

After I obtained my MA degree in engineering in 1997, I was employed by a telecommunication branch company of Posts & Telecommunications Industry Company. I participated in the JSU18 switching System Project, which is planned to produce the sixth largest switching system in China's own switching systems. I was in charge of the No.7 signaling section and developed the trunk communication system. Referring to protocol Q. 764, etc, I designed the TUP (Telephone User Part) & ISUP (ISDN User Part) - the most important part of a switching system-with C++ Language. By now, I have finished the software flow of CPC (call process) of these two parts. Through programming, downloading the procedure into the real switching system, debugging and testing, I came to deeply understand the call process of the large switching system and the relationship between all the modules of a large switching system. The procedure that I completed is so good that we can call successfully through it.

In working on these two projects, I cultivated diligent work habits, independent research ability and team spirit. I feel I have the potential for further further academic growth and am ready to take up the challenge of advanced studies in my chosen field.

From August 1998, I joined Software center Motorola, China and got involved in the CDMA project. We must communicate with international customers on a frequent basis in English environment. So I not only learned about the excellent software development process and various branches of advanced knowledge, but also improved my English ability. Here, we often exchange our findings at presentations given by others and myself in English. I get a lot of technical and non - technical training, in such subjects as Software Product Process, CDMA ( Code Division Multiple Access), GSM, GPRS ( General Packet Radio Service - the third generation system of GSM), TTCN ( Tree and Tabular Combined Notation - a test language), ITEX ( Interactive TTCN Editor and executor - a test tool for the TTCN language), and even English language.

Purpose of Study

I learn greedily, but the more I am trained, the more deeply I realize what I learned earlier is not enough. I have not got a chance to lead a major project, although I have been moving on a smooth career path and always finished my part of every project immaculately. As a female engineer, I must learn more to compete with most male engineers to lead a major project. And in spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not brought my intellectual capabilities into full play. So I desire to enter your esteemed university to pursue advanced studies so that I can lay a solid foundation for my future research work. In the meantime, I will be able to improve my English, and I hope that someday I can speak English as well as Chinese.

I believe I have acquired the necessary theoretical framework and practical experience for advanced studies. Equipped with the ability to teach myself and conduct independent research, I will be able to attain competence quickly in areas that I may at first know very little about. I never work just to finish an assignment, but instead I always try conscientiously to learn as much as possible and sharpen my expertise through the work I do. Keeping this work style, I have become highly skilled in such fields as switching system's trunking system (communications and software), Code Division Multiple Access system (mobile communications and software), SDT & TTCN (CASE and test tools), and pSOS+ system (real-time operation system). These achievements would be a great help in my pursuit of advanced education, especially when I can work under the seasoned guidance of your strong faculty. My previous experience will qualify me for the TA and RA positions of your university as well.

I would like to apply to do graduate studies in the United States where the research and education in global telecommunications are leading the world. I have long admired your esteemed university known for its demanding work ethics and nurturing academic atmosphere. I am confident that I can receive a high quality education on your PhD program. If I am accepted, I am also confident that I can make quick progress in the E. E field, especially in the areas of wireless communication, communication, digital signal processing, the disciplines that share many common characteristics and important principles. Given the broad applications of these technologies, I believe the progress we make in these areas will help shape the future of the mankind. I would like to be at the forefront of such progress. As I am well trained and broadly experienced in EE and computer science, you may find me more than qualified for advanced studies in areas other than those I have mentioned. If so, I would be grateful to your appreciation and would like to hear any advice that you may have for me. Upon completion of the program, I will return to my homeland and strive to make scientific contributions that both your university and I can be proud of.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

A Master’s student of accounting at Xiamen University, the best higher-learning institution in China’s strategically important Province of Fujian, across the Straits from Taiwan, I would like to pursue Ph. D. studies in your distinguished program so that I can be assured a teaching career in my motherland.

My education so far is characterized by indisputable excellence. During the four years of my undergraduate studies, my GPA was consistently the highest in my class of 135 students. As you can see from the transcripts of my academic record, I received straight A’s for all the courses except for first-year Physical Education. My graduation was rated “Outstanding”, the highest rating possible. An in-depth analysis of the ethical standards of Chinese auditors, the paper was later published in a quality professional journal as a seminal study of a rarely studied topic in China. As the unquestionably best student in my year, I was accepted into graduate studies by the university without the normally mandatory entrance examinations.

In recognition of my academic performance and other strengths, I was decorated with many honors and accolades during my undergraduate studies. I was elected the monitor of the class and the Vice President of the university’s Student Union, making me the most important female student leader on campus. Among the financial awards I won was the Jiageng Scholarship, the university’s most prestigious award named after its founder Chen Jiageng, one of the best known patriotic Chinese in the first half of this century. The Jiageng /scholarship is offered to only ten students each year, and the offer is usually presented to the recipients by the university’s president in person in a grand ceremony, as it was in 1996, when I got it.

In my undergraduate studies, I had broad academic interests, although I majored in accounting. I regularly read academic journals, both Chinese and international, to keep me abreast of the latest developments in accounting and other related fields. I devoted considerable time to learning such subjects as law and economics. My extensive knowledge provided me solid grounding as I narrowed down my research interest to professional ethics of accountants. In a country that has only an inchoate legal regime governing professional practice. Enforcing high ethical standards is both difficult and critical. But studies have been scant and haphazard so far. I am glad that I have made quite some contribution to the country’s discourse in this area.

My undergraduate studies were greatly enriched with a most rewarding internship program. As a CPA assistant working for the Accounting Firm affiliated to the university, I took part in the auditing of several major corporations. In the process, I learned not only to put my book knowledge in practice but also acquired first-hand knowledge of how Chinese accountants, operating under inadequate laws and regulations, handled difficult issues. Such knowledge has constituted an important part of the basis for my research on the ethical questions of Chinese accountants and auditors.

In my graduate studies, I have broadened my intellectual horizon and refined my accounting expertise. The courses I took related to both theories and methodologies of accounting and auditing. But the more significant part of my learning is to be found perhaps not in the courses but in the research projects that I have taken part in together with my professors. I have, for example, helped my professors in compiling and editing a major textbook for the continuing education program of the ALL-China Association of Certified Accountants. The book, Cases of Auditing, has just been published and is expected to substantiate the curriculum of the continuing education program.

In my Ph. D. studies, I wish to focus my studies and research on auditing, particularly in relation to audit risk, auditor’s decision-making, ethics of auditing. I am also interested in accounting theories. I heard of Penn State University while I was still an undergraduate student, and I know that its accounting program is marked by selectivity and excellence. I hope that, by studying in your program, I will be able to build on my academic record so far for a promising career as a teacher in China a few years down the road.

Yours sincerely,
