My ‘A’ Level English studies have introduced me to a more academic teaching style with an emphasis on the need for independent work, in order to gain the very best grades. I enjoy seeking more depth and insight, whether for school texts of private reading and study. I have often made use of Leach Scragg’s “Discovering Shakespeare’s Meaning” when studying “Romeo and Juliet”, “Macbeth”, “Twelfth Night” and “The Merchant of Venice” to help me to read and understand the plays more thoroughly. Anthony Holden’s biography has given me a basic understanding of Shakespeare and his world. I have recently purchased “Literary Theory: An Anthology”, edited by Rivkin and Ryan to support my developing interest in critical theory.

In my studies to date I have looked at the modern novel but have recently become interested in learning more about the Victorian novel as the precursor to modernism. I am exploring the concept of the didactic, omniscient narrator and how Victorian authors dealt with issues of contemporary social change. I have read Dickens’s “Great Expectations” and am currently reading Eliot’s “Middlemarch”. A theme that interests me is that of religious faith and doubt also expressed at the time through Victorian post-romantic poetry, such as Arnold’s “Dover Beach” and Clough’s “The Latest Decalogue”.

My reading of modern literature, exploring the theme of “teenage angst” has included works by J.D.Salinger, Nicky Hornby and Sue Townsend. I have also enjoyed the monologue art form of Alan Bennett’s “Talking Heads”. Through his artless narrators I feel that Bennett successfully reveals the comic aspect of the too often tragic human condition. My other studies have broadened my knowledge but I have been keen to incorporate literary aspects. In art, I am currently writing a critical and analytical study on “Stuckism” and last year I completed a piece of work based on the Canterbury Tales. French, apart from providing me with a second modern language, has given me the opportunity to sample foreign literature i.e. Pagnol’s “Jean de Florette” and “Manon des Sources”. I have also found that having to communicate in a foreign language has given me the skill of revising my thinking before I speak or write. Next summer I am going to stay with French friends in the South of France and am then hoping to considerably improve my fluency.

My vocational ‘A’ Level in “Media: Production and Communication” has fuelled an interest in linguistics that I have furthered by reading “The State of the Language” by Phillip Howard. This ‘A’Level has helped me to appreciate the richness of the English Language with its jargon, slang, dialects, argot, clichés, and foreign influences. The most important element of my classroom, my office, or my home is a personal relationship. I have figured this out on examination of my activities in high school (youth group regional president), college (telephone crisis counselor, resident advisor), or profession (teacher). It quickly became my experience that students were more willing to learn, work, and excel when they were appreciated as individuals and when they knew that the adult in the classroom genuinely liked them.

After a few years' experience teaching seniors, I accepted a teaching job at the middle school with the freshman class that had just learned they would not physically be moving to the high school. How would I motivate and get to know these kids? Everything that I had ever heard about or remembered about 9th grade made me want to turn and run. But what convinced me to take this job was technology. In my interview I learned that instead of the library, I was to use the Internet (the what?). I was told that I would receive a laptop computer (aren't those the things that people with real jobs used?) and that the kids could teach me anything I needed to know.

Computers became my thing. Immediately I began to learn how to surf the Internet from 8th and 9th graders (Sanj and Judy said I was teachers' pet). My kids opened up and set aside their raging adolescence to use technology to help me and help each other. As the year with the freshmen continued, I was overjoyed. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer, are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativity in teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students (conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primary source). It was at that time that I made up my mind to pursue a career in mathematics. In 1985, I entered into the East China Normal University to major in mathematics. The mandatory courses ware concentrated mainly in two areas: statistics and application technologies. There were also many elective courses. In addition to courses of statistics and mathematics, I spent a lot of time and energy learning such practical skills as computer programming and the application of some new software systems in statistics. After graduation in 1990, I taught statistics for four years at another university until I decided that I had to satisfy my curiosity further and learn more. In 1994, I joined a graduate program at the Beijing Polytechnic University, where I concentrated my studies in the area of artificial intelligence.

Never a bookworm, I presided over a sampling survey of the middle schools in Shanghai, and published my findings in the ECNU journal. The topic for my graduation paper, the problem of slow server, was actually culled from an article published in pursuing more advanced studies in a technologically more advanced country such as the United States. These journals provided me the necessary quality and amount of reference materials t keep me informed of the cutting edge of the field. The new method that I used in my research and my smooth answers at my defense of the paper could all trace their origin back to the journals that I had read. On the basis of my strong defense, the supervising committee decided unanimously t grant me an unequivocal A for my graduation paper. During the period of my graduate studies, I learned more about the realization technology (not sure what you are trying to say) by using computer programming. In image processing, I used the multianalysis and category theory in statistics, and I helped to institute a recognition system for major fingerprint characteristics. I have been working as a lecturer at the Beijing Polytechnic University since I obtained my Master’s degree. I have basically two main reasons to wish for further studies abroad.
