During my gap year I have had several work experience placements in various skilled trades such as building and joinery. Through joinery I gained an appreciation of the need for accurate design and construction, as well as a knowledge of the uses of wood as a building material. Though much of the building work I have undertaken was in construction, I found it to be invaluable experience. For example, whilst helping to build a garage I learnt about the importance of good design and planning by having to interpret the designs in order to determine how many bricks would be needed. During its constuction I noticed how important it was to build accurately, particually at the corners of the building which supported most of the weight of the roof. I also discovered the importance of keeping costs low, but the quality of work high. We made a different type of cement which was cheaper and weaker, but still met the needs for the inner walls. The most rewarding part of this experience seeing the project through from a plan on paper to its completion, and the feeling of satisfaction once it was completely built.

I have a passionate interest in music and have been playing guitar for about 5 years. I have enjoyed my time as a member of a band, which has helped me to work creatively as part of a team. More recently, I have also achieved grade 2 in jazz piano. For years I have had a great enthusiasm for skateboarding and in November 2005 began undertaking voluntary work with a group helping to plan and design a skateboarding facility in Kings Heath park. We were involved in preparatory work such as gaining public support and undertaking research at existing facilities across the UK, as well as its design. From this experience I learnt the importance of working as part of a team and meeting deadlines. Being appointed as Deputy Head Boy in the sixth form was a great honour to me. Through activities such as Lunch duty, I learnt the worth of different leadership skills, and that it is important to treat everyone as an individual in order to get results. 一、办理签证

In my work with animals, I learned that perseverance is key to successful treatment. Interruption of that treatment can lead to disastrous results. In many rural communities near my home, I witnessed the consequences of the absence of consistent medical care. As a farrier, I have worked in many old-order Mennonite communities whose needs aren’t being met: when one client's daughter injured her hand in a corn sheller, she was unable to get medical care because facilities were far away and no doctors could come to their farm. The girl’s hand was infected and not healing well. I did what I could, but I was troubled that I didn’t have the expertise to treat the injury. On my next visit, I saw that her hand had grown deformed. Had she been able to see a physician more frequently, her hand might have healed correctly. Encounters of this kind have revealed to me the consequences of medically underserved communities. I look forward to working toward a solution to this problem when I am a physician.

A good veterinarian operates with precision. I have applied the careful, exacting skills I learned with animals to my lab work. I am currently involved in research on corneal endothelium with Dr. Carson Kennedy. In the lab, we study mammalian corneal cells; eventually, we would like to describe and prevent ophthalmic diseases such as glaucoma. Through this work, I have honed my scientific skills and sharpened my analytical mind. From a very early age I remember pondering questions that were, to me, seemingly unanswerable: what existed before the Big Bang? Why is a paperclip attracted to a magnet? What exactly is holding an atom together? I am fascinated by these ideas and am hungry to learn the theories needed to attempt to explain them. My main interest within physics lies in quantum mechanics. About two years ago I was shown a video on the Internet by an astounded friend that explained the results of Young’s double slit experiment (using electrons) in relatively simple terms. I was stunned to see that a single electron can pass through two slits at once, but as soon as its path is observed it ‘decides’ to act in a completely different manner! My ignorance of the topic created a desire for me to learn more about this astonishing idea and so I read ‘Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed’ by Jim Al-Khallili. From this brilliant book I learnt about the way in which the electron transforms into a probability wave or “wavefunction” and interferes with itself after diffracting out of the slits. The book then introduced me to complex applications of this experiment and, along with various magazine and Internet articles, I clarified for myself intricate ideas such as Schrodinger’s cat and quantum entanglement. I also read ‘The Trouble with Physics’ by Lee Smolin in which he describes previous attempts at unification of various ideas in physics, such as the successful unification of electricity and magnetism, or the unsuccessful unification of light and sound. He then goes on to explain one of the current attempts at the unification of all known forces and particles – string theory. I feel that reading on these topics has prepared me well for undergraduate physics and I am excited at the prospect of studying at a higher level.

To familiarise myself with how physics can be used practically, I requested a visit to the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Research Group at Imperial College London. I assisted a PhD student and his supervisor every day for three weeks in their ion-trapping project that aimed to shed light on quantum computing. My main job was to build a circuit to power an electron beam. The beam was used to form ions from calcium atoms, as ions are more easily manipulated. However, the circuit had to be built in such a way that it would automatically adjust the intensity of the beam to form just the right number of ions.

In my spare time, I am generally found playing the drum kit. After passing Grade 8 with distinction I have taken up teaching and play in four different music groups: a concert band, a jazz group, a brass band and my own funk fusion band. I enjoy performing in and around London and annually touring European countries with the school concert band. To keep fit I play football and table tennis with friends. Competitively, I have represented my school on a number of occasions in football, rugby and athletics competitions.

Studying all three sciences and maths at A-level has given me the opportunity to explore a wide range of different theories, techniques and problems and has provided me with a broad scientific training base from which I wish to develop further. 一、考试概述
