The pressures of population growth and global warming are ever increasing, and civil engineers can help play a major role in designing more efficient structures, as well as planning projects in developing countries. I am attracted to me to civil engineering because I like the idea of helping to shape the world around me to meet the demands of the future. I hope for a challenging career which I will find personally rewarding and be able to feel that I have given something back to the community.

Academically, science has always been my main interest and is the area in which I am most able. I enjoyed biology, in particular learning about human impact on the environment. However, during my A levels I realised that my interests lay deeper in maths and physics. I enjoyed the problem solving involved within my subjects and the way a real life situation could be expressed and manipulated mathematically. What I found particularly interesting was relating what had been learnt in the classroom to real life situations, which is what gave me more interest in civil engineering - the appeal of a challenging career where I would have the opportunity to theoretically solve problems and practically apply solutions to have a beneficial effect on the world around me.

During my gap year I have had several work experience placements in various skilled trades such as building and joinery. Through joinery I gained an appreciation of the need for accurate design and construction, as well as a knowledge of the uses of wood as a building material. Though much of the building work I have undertaken was in construction, I found it to be invaluable experience. For example, whilst helping to build a garage I learnt about the importance of good design and planning by having to interpret the designs in order to determine how many bricks would be needed. During its constuction I noticed how important it was to build accurately, particually at the corners of the building which supported most of the weight of the roof. I also discovered the importance of keeping costs low, but the quality of work high. We made a different type of cement which was cheaper and weaker, but still met the needs for the inner walls. The most rewarding part of this experience seeing the project through from a plan on paper to its completion, and the feeling of satisfaction once it was completely built.

I have a passionate interest in music and have been playing guitar for about 5 years. I have enjoyed my time as a member of a band, which has helped me to work creatively as part of a team. More recently, I have also achieved grade 2 in jazz piano. For years I have had a great enthusiasm for skateboarding and in November 2005 began undertaking voluntary work with a group helping to plan and design a skateboarding facility in Kings Heath park. We were involved in preparatory work such as gaining public support and undertaking research at existing facilities across the UK, as well as its design. From this experience I learnt the importance of working as part of a team and meeting deadlines. Also, I gained an understanding of just how much preparation and organisation is needed, even for a small development.

By studying civil engineering at university I hope to build on my knowledge of maths and physics and learn how to apply it to real life situations. Having enjoyed my time at school I am excited by the prospect of going to university and learning more about our world around us. Work experience has allowed me to see how law can be applied to real-life situations. During my placement, I was able to look through case files and sit in on interviews with clients as well as doing research using legal textbooks. In addition to showing me how relevant law is to everyday life, work experience emphasised the all-encompassing nature of law and made me appreciate the workload of a solicitor. I also did work experience in Stuttgart, spending time with a judge, a lawyer specialising in German-Irish Law and a firm specialising in employment law. I was able to sit in on negotiations, see how a judge comes to a verdict and how evidence is analysed. Work experience gave me a flavour of international law, and I enjoyed the complexity of dealing with two different legal systems. Not only was this beneficial as additional work experience, I was also able to prove to myself that I could live independently and that I am mature enough cope in a foreign environment. I have also carried out research into the study of law, attending a pre-law conference in London and reading ‘Learning the Law’ by Glanville Williams and ‘The Law Machine’ by Marcel Berlins and Clare Dyer. I believe the subjects I have chosen will also give me a good foundation for studying law. Mathematics would aid me greatly, as it is both logical and methodical as well as being challenging. I believe that English Literature has provided me with skills essential for studying law such as analysis, comprehension and interpretation. Economics encourages one to select relevant information from long passages of text, and to apply theory to real-life situations. It also presents ethical and moral issues which raises discussion and debate, as a result I have learnt to argue my point coherently, whilst respecting the other’s point of view.

I have also been given several positions of responsibility both inside school and in extra curricular activities. I represented my class on the Student Council, where I learnt to work successfully as a team member, and improved the school environment as a result. This year, I have also been appointed Head Girl. This will enable me to further improve my teamwork, organisational skills as well as demonstrating my leadership potential. As Head Girl, my duties include representing the school and speaking in assembly. I have represented the school in public speaking on several occasions, resulting in the school being awarded runner-up overall for a Safety competition. From a very early age I remember pondering questions that were, to me, seemingly unanswerable: what existed before the Big Bang? Why is a paperclip attracted to a magnet? Now that I am older and have a wider knowledge of current physics, I can contemplate other, more involved questions. How is it possible that a cat can be alive and dead at the same time? What exactly is holding an atom together? I am fascinated by these ideas and am hungry to learn the theories needed to attempt to explain them. I welcome the prospect of spending time and effort working with the scientific community to achieve a wider appreciation of the world we live in and trying to attain a level of understanding as high as is possible in a single lifetime.

My main interest within physics lies in quantum mechanics. About two years ago I was shown a video on the Internet by an astounded friend that explained the results of Young’s double slit experiment (using electrons) in relatively simple terms. I was stunned to see that a single electron can pass through two slits at once, but as soon as its path is observed it ‘decides’ to act in a completely different manner! My ignorance of the topic created a desire for me to learn more about this astonishing idea and so I read ‘Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed’ by Jim Al-Khallili. From this brilliant book I learnt about the way in which the electron transforms into a probability wave or “wavefunction” and interferes with itself after diffracting out of the slits. The book then introduced me to complex applications of this experiment and, along with various magazine and Internet articles, I clarified for myself intricate ideas such as Schrodinger’s cat and quantum entanglement. I also read ‘The Trouble with Physics’ by Lee Smolin in which he describes previous attempts at unification of various ideas in physics, such as the successful unification of electricity and magnetism, or the unsuccessful unification of light and sound. He then goes on to explain one of the current attempts at the unification of all known forces and particles – string theory. I feel that reading on these topics has prepared me well for undergraduate physics and I am excited at the prospect of studying at a higher level.

To familiarise myself with how physics can be used practically, I requested a visit to the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Research Group at Imperial College London. I assisted a PhD student and his supervisor every day for three weeks in their ion-trapping project that aimed to shed light on quantum computing. My main job was to build a circuit to power an electron beam. The beam was used to form ions from calcium atoms, as ions are more easily manipulated. However, the circuit had to be built in such a way that it would automatically adjust the intensity of the beam to form just the right number of ions.

In my spare time, I am generally found playing the drum kit. After passing Grade 8 with distinction I have taken up teaching and play in four different music groups: a concert band, a jazz group, a brass band and my own funk fusion band. I enjoy performing in and around London and annually touring European countries with the school concert band. To keep fit I play football and table tennis with friends. Competitively, I have represented my school on a number of occasions in football, rugby and athletics competitions.

Studying all three sciences and maths at A-level has given me the opportunity to explore a wide range of different theories, techniques and problems and has provided me with a broad scientific training base from which I wish to develop further. All of these subjects pose exciting challenges, but my main passion is for physics.
